NEW WRINKLE TO GENDER BIAS

While it has long been suspected that women develop more and deeper wrinkles around their mouths than men, a new study provides “irrefutable scientific evidence” that this is the case. As far as an explanation for this gender-based difference, dermatologists indicate that it is probably due to the amount of sebaceous glands as well as the connections between the skin and muscles of the lips. The fact is that women have fewer sweat or sebaceous glands, which produce the oil that keeps skin soft. Women also have fewer blood vessels providing blood to that region. In addition, the muscles around women’s mouths are closer to the skin than in men, which may pull the skin in tighter, causing wrinkles.

P.S. Although men and women have about the same number of hair follicles, men have more sweat glands per hair follicle, which contributes to more relaxed skin as they age.
