ROOT CAUSE OF GRAYING HAIR IDENTIFIED

Scientists have finally discovered why our hair turns gray as we age. It seems that an examination of cell cultures of human hair follicles shows that a buildup of hydrogen peroxide, due to wear and tear on the hair follicles, blocks the normal synthesis of melanin (the hair’s natural pigment). So it seems that bleached blondes have been taking their cues from nature all along. While all hair cells produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, production increases as we age. This buildup of hydrogen peroxide is caused by a reduction of an enzyme called “catalase,” which breaks up hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. As scientists further explore the hair-graying mechanism, they hope to unlock a means of arresting it.

Many people chemically treat their hair to camouflage gray hair, which occurs as a natural part of the aging process. With the proliferation of medi-spas and even non-physician skin care facilities, it is important to identify who is truly an expert in skin care. Please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 for a skin evaluation by a Board Certified Dermatologist. We offer state-of-the-art dermatologic treatments, including Botox and chemical peels, to help people enjoy a more youthful appearance. Our practice is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst. We accept most medical insurance, Visa, and MasterCard.

P.S. Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin color, eye color, and hair color.
