FULL-BODY SKIN EXAMINATIONS
While it may make obvious sense that a full-body skin examination (FBSE) by a dermatologist offers the clear benefit of using trained eyes to look for skin cancers, some argue that there is insufficient evidence to conclude that the exam should be routinely recommended. However, the finding of a recent study may change all that. According to the new research, dermatologists who conducted full-body skin exams were better at detecting skin cancers than patients themselves. FBSEs by dermatologists were found to be particularly effective at finding early-stage melanomas that had not yet invaded below the surface of the skin. While self-examination plays a big role in skin cancer detection, dermatologists should also be routinely enlisted in the effort.
Your risk of skin cancer is related to the amount of sun exposure you’ve had over your lifetime. Examine your skin on a regular basis for moles that have either grown or changed shape or color. Please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to arrange a medical skin examination. Our practice is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst. We accept most medical insurance, Visa, and MasterCard.
P.S. The sooner melanoma is discovered and treated, the higher the possibility of full recovery. |
