SKIN AS ECOSYSTEM
If you want to observe a fascinating ecosystem filled with vast amounts of fascinating life forms, you don’t have to travel to a South American rain forest—all you have to do is examine your own skin under a microscope. According to information newly attained from the National Institute of Health’s Human Microbiome Project, scientists have used gene-decoding techniques to identify about 1,000 strains (or species) of bacteria from only 20 spots on the skin of 10 people. As might be imagined, there are more species of bacteria in warm, moist areas like the underarms than there are on the generally dry forearms. While some bacteria are “good,” others have the potential to cause harm. So, a harmonious balance is desirable.
Your skin is a delicate surface that is exposed to good and bad bacteria. If you experience skin discomfort or notice an unusual spot or rash on your skin, please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to schedule an evaluation. We provide diagnosis and medical or surgical treatment of skin conditions, infections, inflammation, and growths. Our practice is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst. We accept most medical insurance, Visa, and MasterCard.
P.S. According to the scientific investigation mentioned above, scientists found that the bacteria under two unrelated people’s underarms are more similar than the bacteria living on one person's underarm and forearm. |
