FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS

Men are not the only ones susceptible to pattern hair loss (“androgenetic alopecia”). In fact, nearly every woman eventually experiences female pattern hair loss to some degree. While its onset can occur anytime after puberty begins, women tend to first take notice of hair loss during menopause. Androgenic hair loss, which is more common among women with a history of hair loss on either side of their families, typically begins with gradual thinning at the parts in their hair. This loss is followed by increasing diffuse hair loss, which radiates from the crown. As its name suggests, androgenetic alopecia is usually related to increased androgen activity. Once the cause of hair loss is properly diagnosed, the dermatologist can recommend treatment.

A hormone imbalance due to menopausal changes, medications, or genetics may cause a woman’s hair to become thin at the temples or at the crown of the head. In many cases, this imbalance can be corrected. Please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to schedule an evaluation of your hair loss. Our services include diagnosis and medical treatment of hair loss. We also provide a range of specialized cosmetic dermatology, including Botox® and chemical peels. Our practice is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst.

P.S. Androgens are hormones that are responsible for normal sexual development and play important roles in influencing sex drive as well as the regulation of hair growth.
