HOLD THE PHONE!
When dermatologists were confronted with patients who displayed inexplicable rashes on their cheeks and ears, they identified the cause with little trouble. So-called “mobile phone dermatitis” is a red, itchy rash that cell phone users develop when they hold their devices to their faces for prolonged periods of time. The actual culprit that causes the allergic reaction is the nickel surface found on many mobile phones. Nickel is a metal that is commonly found in many consumer products, ranging from jewelry to belt buckles. An allergic skin reaction to nickel can develop after the initial and/or a brief exposure, or repeated and/or prolonged exposure, depending on the individual’s susceptibility. Once a nickel allergy develops, it is usually a chronic condition.
Contact dermatitis allergies can develop to products or devices that you have used for years without any issues. Affected skin is red and itchy and the rash persists over time. If you should develop a persistent, pruritic rash, please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to schedule an evaluation of your skin. P.S. The American Contact Dermatitis Society named nickel the Allergen of the Year for 2008.
