SKIN CANCER ASSOCIATED WITH OTHER CANCERS
Recent research suggests that people with a history of basal or squamous cell skin cancer (also known as non-melanoma skin cancer) are at increased risk for other types of cancers later on. This means that genetic factors may be responsible for putting some people at higher risk for cancer than others. In fact, after adjusting for all factors, researchers found that there was a doubling of risk for subsequent cancers among non-melanoma patients. With this in mind, dermatologists recommend that people be particularly diligent about being screened for skin cancer. To minimize their risk of developing cancer, they can also avoid smoking, limit alcohol intake, avoid excessive sun exposure, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, and eat more fruits and vegetables.
As with most diseases, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of developing skin cancer. If you notice a lesion on any part of your body, including your face, neck, or arms, please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to arrange a skin evaluation.
