STUDY BACKS SKIN REJUVENATION METHOD
A recent study shows that the skin rejuvenation method known as “photodynamic therapy” stimulates collagen production and helps revitalize sun-damaged skin. Already being performed to improve the appearance of skin with fine lines, wrinkles and sun spots, this procedure involves dabbing a clear solution on the skin and the use of a pulsed dye laser. The solution, known as Levulan, increases the skin’s sensitivity to light and, thus, improves its receptiveness to the laser’s brief flashes of energy. Levulan was approved by the FDA in 1999 for the treatment of precancerous skin lesions called “actinic keratoses.” Used off-label in photodynamic therapy, researchers found that collagen production was twice as great with Levulan plus laser treatment compared to laser treatment alone.
