IS TANNING SAFE?
With all the attention that vitamin D is deservedly getting as a promoter of good health, some people may wonder if it is okay to tan since ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun spurs the body to produce this vitamin D. The short answer is "no." People need far less ultraviolet-light exposure for their bodies to produce vitamin D than it takes to tan. In fact, research shows that there is no such thing as a "safe tan." According to a recent review of published studies, tans and skin cancer both begin with DNA damage that is caused by exposure to ultraviolet light. DNA damage is the first step in getting a mutation in cells that could lead to cancer.
The body needs various vitamins, including vitamin D, to function properly. Some exposure to the sun triggers development of vitamin D. Exposure to the point of tanning, however, is much more than needed and increases your risk of developing skin cancer. If you notice unusual spots on your skin or have skin discoloration, please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to arrange a skin evaluation.
