SOMETHING TO SNIFF AT
When reports of a cancer-sniffing dog first appeared, many people accepted the fact yet remained curious as to how it was possible. Researchers now seem to have an answer. Chemists in the United States have identified the odor that is given off by skin cancer. By analyzing the air above tumor sites in patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, chemists were able to isolate a “profile of chemicals” that is different from the one surrounding healthy skin. Although scientists have yet to release the specific chemical involved, they intend to identify a reliable “odor profile” for all three types of skin cancer. Doing so could significantly alter the way diagnoses are made.
