PROVIDING USEFUL INFORMATION TO TEENS WITH ACNE
Several myths surrounding adolescent acne can only be dispelled by providing teenagers with the factual information they need to address the condition. For instance, there is a persistent belief that eating "bad" foods such as chocolate and fried foods contributes to acne. The fact is, however, no foods cause acne or make it worse. Instead, the problem can be traced to abnormal flaking of cells inside hair follicles that lead to the formation of plugs that may rupture the hair follicles, causing inflammation. Bacteria normally found on the skin and hormones also play roles in the development of acne. Fortunately, a recent study shows that audiovisual computerized presentations are as effective as printed handouts at informing teens of acne’s causes.
Contrary to popular belief, a person’s diet does not cause acne. Normally, cells that line the hair follicle are shed as new cells replace them. The dead cells mix with oil and work their way up to the skin’s surface to be washed away. Sometimes, follicles produce cells that stick together and never make it to the surface. As more oil is produced, the follicle swells. At ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY, we offer comprehensive treatment of acne in teens and adults. Please call at 630-832-2111 to schedule an evaluation of your skin. Our practice is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst. We accept most medical insurance, Visa, and MasterCard.
P.S. Surveys show that most teens receive information about acne from television, parents, friends, and magazines, and that most patients are dissatisfied with that information.
