NEW PSORIASIS MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES
New guidelines recently released by the American Academy of Dermatology for management of mild to severe psoriasis focus on the use of biologics. Administered by injection or infusion, these systemic medications pinpoint immune responses involved with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. While the new guidelines recognize that topical treatments are appropriate for patients who are good candidates for localized therapy, they should not be used exclusively in cases of patients who would benefit from a combination of systemic and/or phototherapy treatments. However, once biologic therapy has been initiated, patients should avoid vaccinations with live vaccines and consult their dermatologist before receiving vaccinations of any kind. Periodic re-evaluations by the dermatologist are also needed to check for the development of new symptoms.
Symptoms of psoriasis can include patches of raised, red bumps covered with white, flaking scales on the scalp, knees, or elbows.
