SAVE YOUR SCALP!

Because they are covered by more hair than other parts of the body, suspicious lesions on the scalp may defy detection. Failure to spot these areas poses a real danger because the first invasive melanoma of the scalp (as well as the neck) is nearly twice as lethal, within 5-10 years, as malignant lesions on the extremities, trunk, face, or ears. A recent retrospective study of melanoma patients shows that it is important for people to understand that the specific area where melanoma is first detected can determine how potentially lethal this life-threatening form of skin cancer may be. With this in mind, people are encouraged to pay particular attention to their scalps and necks when examining for suspicious lesions.

Many people now realize that a mole that develops an unusual shape, color, or border could indicate melanoma. What may be less known is that melanoma can develop on the scalp. This form of cancer is deadly if not treated quickly. If you or your hairdresser notice a small, roughly circular spot on your scalp, please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to schedule an evaluation. Our services include diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and expert care of chronic skin diseases. We consider it a privilege to care for you and your family. Our office is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst.

P.S. The earlier that melanoma is detected, the greater the chance that it can be treated successfully.
