SPOTTING “UGLY DUCKLING” MOLES
Melanoma is more common among people who have many moles, particularly if the moles are atypical in terms of color, shape, and size. It is critical that individuals with many moles are able to recognize this potentially deadly form of skin cancer at the earliest possible time. To help them, dermatologists have used the acronym "ABCDE" to identify the early warning signs of melanoma: A stands for Asymmetry, B stands for Border, C for Color, D for Diameter, and E for Evolving. Most recently, patients and physicians have also been urged to spot moles that look appreciably different (stand out as “ugly ducklings”) from surrounding moles. That is, moles that look different from the rest should be examined and evaluated.
One type of skin cancer, melanoma, is deadly if not treated early. Your risk of skin cancer is related to the amount of sun exposure you have had over your lifetime. Most moles are harmless. However, it is important to examine your moles regularly because a change in their appearance may be a warning sign of melanoma. Please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to arrange a skin evaluation. We diagnose and treat skin cancer, infections, inflammation, and growths in adults, teens, and children. We are located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst. Most medical insurance, Visa, and MasterCard welcome.
P.S. The "ugly duckling" test may be especially useful in the detection of nodular melanoma, which is a dangerous type of melanoma that conspicuously lacks the classic ABCDE signs.
