DIABETICS AND DERMATOLOGICAL DISORDERS
Patients with type 1 diabetes should include a dermatologist on the list of doctors whom they regularly visit. The reason for this is that about two-thirds of patients with type 1 diabetes may have skin disorders, some of which may develop early in the course of the disease. While diabetes is known to be associated with a number of skin disorders, and skin problems usually develop after diabetes does, a skin problem may precede a diagnosis of diabetes or even be the first sign of the disease. For this reason alone vigilance is necessary. Dry patches of scaly skin (ichthyosis), abnormal growth of blood vessels causing red discoloration (rubeosis), and fungal infection among diabetics are relatively common.
Diabetes is a condition in which glucose cannot enter cells because of an insulin problem, resulting in high blood glucose levels. Diabetes can cause a variety of problems, including skin disorders. Early detection of any skin disorder helps minimize its negative effects. Please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to arrange an evaluation.
