ACNE-LIKE BUMPS
The harmless skin disorder known as “keratosis pilaris” causes acne-like bumps that usually appear
on the upper arms, legs, and/or buttocks. They
generally result from a buildup of protein (keratin) in the openings of hair follicles. While this hardened
goose-flesh does not pose a long-term health problem
and usually resolves on its own, many deem it to be
unsightly. To improve the appearance of their skin,
those affected by keratosis pilaris may be advised by
the dermatologist to use alpha hydroxy acids or Retin
A (tretinoin), both of which are keratolytic agents
capable of dissolving excess skin and leaving remaining
skin smoother. When the face is affected, topical
corticosteroids may be used, which help decrease cell
turnover.
