BURNED!
Even as knowledge of the link between sun exposure
and skin cancer becomes more widespread, a recent
study shows that the percentage of American adults
getting sunburned is increasing. An, analysis of data
collected through surveys shows that the incidence of
sunburn among American adults increased from 31.8
percent to 33.7 percent between 1999 and 2004. Overall,
men were more likely to get sunburned (35.8 percent
in 1999 versus 37 percent in both 2003 and 2004) than
women (28 percent, 30.2 percent and 30.3 percent,
respectively). This increase has potentially dangerous
health consequences, as sunburn increases the risk of
developing melanoma and basal cell carcinoma skin
cancers. With this in mind, everyone is advised to wear
protective clothing and sunscreen.
Some people find it relaxing to sit in the sun or walk
outdoors on sunny days. September is National Skin
Care Awareness Month. Protect your skin by wearing
sun screen while you’re in the sun, examining your skin
routinely for changes in the appearance of moles, and
having your skin examined by a healthcare professional.
