THERE IS A SKIN CANCER EPIDEMIC!
This country is currently in the throes of a skin cancer
epidemic that has largely been ignored by the general
public, says the American Academy of Dermatology.
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer, and the
risk doubles for those who have experienced five or more
sunburns. While basal and squamous cell carcinomas
(the most common and treatable types of skin cancers)
have long been considered a problem for the over-50
set, researchers have found that the percentage of
women under 40 with the more common type (basal
cell) increased 300% between 1976 and 2003. During
that same period, the rate of squamous cell cancers
increased by 400%. Schedule an appointment with the
dermatologist soon, and limit your sun exposure.
Although there are about 1 million cases of skin cancer
diagnosed each year, most of these cancers are easily
treated and cured. One type of skin cancer, melanoma, is
deadly if not treated early and the number of new cases
is increasing. Wear sunscreen when outdoors and have
unusual moles professionally examined. To arrange an
evaluation From a Board Certified Dermatologist, please
call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111.
We offer diagnosis and treatment of skin problems and
diseases, including skin cancer. The practice is located at
242 N. York Road, Suite 101, Elmhurst.
P.S. The study mentioned above found that only 60% of
the cancers were located on skin frequently exposed to
the sun, rather than the usual 90%. This finding points to
increasing tanning bed use as a probable cause. |
