REDDENED OR NOT
If you experience persistent redness of the face
that makes it look as though you are constantly
blushing, you may have the skin condition known as rosacea. Those affected usually have fair skin and are over age 30. While the exact cause of
rosacea is unknown, and there is no cure, the condition can be managed. Once the dermatologist makes a diagnosis, initial treatment involves the use of an oral antibiotic, as well as applying topical creams and ointments. To reduce the red, acne-like appearance of the skin, it also helps to wash your face with gentle, non-abrasive facial cleansers with lukewarm water. Avoid the use of a washcloth, and do not scrub your face roughly.
Rosacea usually starts with redness on the cheeks and can slowly worsen to include one or more
additional symptoms and parts of the face,
including the eyes. Unfortunately, many people mistake rosacea for acne or sunburn. Several
medications are available to control redness. If you have redness, red lines, or nasal bumps, please call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to schedule a consultation. We offer a full range of dermatology services, including laser treatment of rosacea. We are located at 242 N. York Road,
Suite 101, Elmhurst.
P.S. Because exposure to the sun’s rays can irritate rosacea-reddened skin, it is best to use sunscreen all year round. |
