NOT TO BE OVERLOOKED
Not only is sexually transmitted human papillomavirus
(HPV) associated with cervical cancer, it can also
cause genital non-melanoma skin cancer. There needs
to be an increased awareness of this fact since some
of the most dangerous skin cancers are ones that
are not sun-induced. This includes skin cancers that
occur an the genital skin. Since exposure to sunlight
is one of the primary risk factors associated with skin
cancers, doctors and patients often overlook places
on the body that are routinely covered and protected
from exposure to direct sun. And because genital skin
cancers are not always readily visible and may not
cause noticeable symptoms, they can be difficult to
diagnose. More effort must be placed on prevention
and detection.
Many people associate skin cancer with cumulative
exposure to the sun. However, there are dangerous
skin cancers that occur on the genital skin that are not
sun-directed. April is National Sexually Transmitted
Diseases (STD) Education and Awareness Month.
