MOISTURIZING YOUR SKIN
On top of the skin’s living cells, which are supplied with moisture by blood vessels, there are layers of dead cells (the stratum corneum) that eventually slough off. As moisture passes from the living layers through the dead layers and into the air, the stratum corneum dries out and fine lines and even cracks appear in the skin. To counter this drying effect, moisturizers can be applied. Those with humectant
ingredients, such as glycerin, attract and hold moisture from the air. These products feel light and leave little residue on the skin. On the other hand, moisturizers that use occlusive ingredients, such as petroleum jelly and lanolin, serve as a barrier to prevent moisture loss.
Your skin is a delicate surface that loses moisture due to exposure to water, environmental factors, and age. Does your skin need some extra care? If yes, call ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY at 630-832-2111 to arrange an evaluation from a Board Certified Dermatologist. We offer customized skin care services for men and women, including Botox® and Restylane therapy and chemical peels. The practice is located at 242 N. York Road Suite 101, Elmhurst.
P.S. The natural oils that help moisturize and protect the skin tend to diminish as people age, making skin moisturizers especially necessary later in life. |
