SOME BUMPS ALONG THE WAY
The skin disorder known as lichen planus is
characterized by reddish-purple, flat-topped bumps.
These very itchy bumps can appear anywhere on
the body but seem to gravitate toward the insides
of the wrists and ankles. They can also show up
on the lower back, neck, legs, genitals, and in rare
cases, the scalp and nails. Thick patches may occur,
especially on the shins, and blisters are rare. In
some cases, lichen planus of the skin causes few
problems and requires no treatment. However, many
people afflicted with lichen planus experience severe
itching, which necessitates treatment with topical
corticosteriod creams and antihistamine drugs. As
it heals, lichen planus often leaves a dark brown
discoloration of the skin, which may eventually fade.
If you experience the symptoms described in this
week’s column, you may have lichen planus. Please
