NO EXIT

One persistent myth surrounding pimples is the notion that they are caused by dirt. While it is certainly preferable to keep your face clean with regular washing, it will not necessarily keep you blemish-free. The fact of the matter is that pimples form when hair follicles get clogged, which blocks the normal exit pathway for oil (called sebum) to escape to the surface of the skin. Androgen hormones, which rise during puberty, cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum. When the oil mixes with cells lining the follicle, a favorable environment is created for bacteria to move in and cause inflammation. As the inflamed area swells, the follicle walls break down and the pimple emerges into the skin.

Acne is not caused by dirt, so frequent washing, especially with harsh soap, can actually make acne worse. Although we see acne as blemishes on the skin, the trouble starts long before - below the surface in the hair follicles. At ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY, we offer personalized skin care evaluations and services for all skin types and problems, including acne, eczema, and dermatitis. Please call us at 630-832-2111 for high-quality, personalized care from a Board Certified Dermatologist. We are located at 242 N. York Road, Suite 101, Elmhurst. Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year!

P.S. Blackheads fueled the misconception that acne is caused by dirt. In reality, sebum turns brownish black when exposed to the air.
