DO MEN SEE THE LIGHT?

A recent study shows that the message about sunscreen use is not getting to men. Researchers point out that, when it comes to protecting their skin from the sun’s harmful rays, women get most of the attention. Some of the problem stems from the fact that, according to a new U.S. study, 77 percent of the 783 sunscreen ads studied were published in women’s magazines. Analysis of magazine ads published during a five-year period showed that there were about four sunscreen ads per women’s magazine, less than one ad in each family or parenting magazine, and less than one per six issues of outdoors and recreation magazines read primarily by men. At least our column is doing its part.

Research indicates that men have missed the message that exposure to UV rays can lead to skin cancer and cause premature aging of the skin.
