WORKPLACE ECZEMA

Recent research points out that occupational hand eczema, which is characterized by inflammation and redness, ranks foremost among this (and other Western) country’s most recognized occupational diseases. Such common workplace irritants as chemicals, soaps, and detergents have led to prolonged sick leaves and unemployment over the past few decades. The disease can also adversely affect quality of life. The skin condition has been linked to depression, job loss, and high risk of prolonged job leave, especially among those on the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder. If you suffer from job-related hand eczema, you are encouraged to see the dermatologist as soon as possible. Treatment could make a big impact on your life.

If you are a hairdresser, painter, or hold another occupation that exposes you to chemicals or soaps, be attentive to the condition of your skin. Red and inflamed skin could mean that you have eczema. Early diagnosis of a skin problem increases the likelihood of a successful treatment program. At ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY, we diagnose and treat skin problems and diseases, including eczema, warts, and rashes. Call us at 630-832-2111 to schedule an appointment. We are located at 242 N. York Road, Suite 101, Elmhurst.

P.S. The groups most affected by occupational hand eczema are butchers, cooks and kitchen workers, hairdressers, and people aged 25 to 29.
