ANTIBIOTIC-RESISTANT ACNE
Because they directly target bacteria, antibiotics are commonly prescribed for the treatment of acne. However, dermatologists are noticing a rise in antibiotic-resistant acne, which has many limiting the duration of antibiotic treatment and/or combining antibiotics with other medications in an effort to lessen drug resistance. While few studies have been published on drug-resistant acne, it is estimated that between 10 percent and 30 percent of acne sufferers have some drug-resistant bacteria. When such commonly prescribed antibiotics as tetracycline and erythromycin fail to provide the desired effect, it can limit treatment options. Even so, acne is more complicated than a simple infection, which means that dermatologists will undertake a multi-pronged approach to treating the condition.
A skin condition such as acne can affect a person’s self-esteem and levels of social interactions. Acne is one of the most common skin conditions affecting people of all ages.
