WHICH ANTI-AGING CREAMS GET AN "A"?

If you wear a daily facial cream with the expectation that it will protect your skin from the sun's ultraviolet radiation, be sure it provides broad-spectrum protection against both UV-B and UV-A rays. While UV-B rays are the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn, UV-A rays penetrate the skin more deeply and are known to play a major role in skin aging and wrinkling. Recent research shows that UV-A rays damage skin cells called "keratinocytes" in the basal layer of the epidermis, where most skin cancers occur. Yet, in a recent review of 29 top-selling daily facial creams, researchers found that, regardless of cost, popularity, or sun protection factor (SPF), most contained inadequate protection against photoaging from UV-A rays.

When you walk down the isle of a pharmacy, you see a variety of skin creams with different types and levels of UV-ray protection. It is challenging to find a cream that provides thorough coverage. At ELMHURST DERMATOLOGY, we educate our patients about all aspects of their skin, including how to protect it from harmful UV-B and UV-A rays. Are you seeking a more youthful appearance? Our specialized cosmetic services include Juvederm dermal fillers, Botox, and chemical peels. Please call us at 630-832-2111 to arrange an evaluation. Our practice is located at 103 N. Haven, Suite 7, Elmhurst. We strive to provide the highest quality care to our patients.

P.S. If you spend the majority of your day shielded from direct sunlight by only window glass, you need UV-A protection more than UV-B protection because UV-A penetrates window glass while UV-B is blocked.
